Royal Arsenal's Military Connections

The Royal Arsenal and Woolwich have a long history of connections with the Military and The Royal Artillery Barracks are on Repository Road together with The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery.

The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment (or PWRR, also known as 'The Tigers') is the senior English line infantry regiment of the British Army, part of the Queen's Division, and second only in line infantry order of precedence to the The Royal Regiment of Scotland. It was formed in 1992 by the amalgamation of The Queen's Regiment and The Royal Hampshire Regimentand holds the earliest battle honour in the British Army (Tangier 1662–80) which was not awarded until 1909. Through its ancestry via the Queen's Regiment to the Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey), the PWRR is the most senior English line infantry regiment. The current regiment was named in honour of Diana, Princess of Wales.

The regiment as a whole has attained fifty-seven Victoria Cross awards making it the British Army's most decorated Regiment.

The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery used to be called the Royal Horse Artillery. For more information about the current Artillery visit the Crown's website and The Royal Borough of Greenwich or for more history visit The Garrison

If you've been around when The King's Troop are exercising the horses, it's a wonderful sight. The line of horses goes from the darkest to the lightest and they are truly magnificent to see. Occasionally they are walked through the Royal Arsenal.

Help for Heroes was started 6 years ago by two people who wanted to make a difference to the lives of returning service men and women who had sustained life changing injuries. The Charity prides itself on being none political; none critical. But the fact remains that these men and women are doing a job; their job just happens to be fighting wars, and the Charity just want to help them. If you were injured at work, you’d expect to be supported and it isn’t any different for them. The war in Afghanistan may be nearly over, but for those who have suffered life changing injuries, their battles are just beginning.

To show our support, a Royal Arsenal Residents' fundraising page has been set up - any donation would be welcome. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, taking part in any of the events organised by the Charity or holding your own fundraising event, please contact the Local Coordinator for SE London - Louise Shaw on louise.shaw@h4hcounty.org.uk.

Example of ways to get involved to raise money for the charity are:

          Stockings for Heroes,

          Trekking across Vietnam,

          Colossal Cake Sale,

          Abseiling,

          Skydiving or

Cycling in the Hero Ride from Blackheath into the centre of London.
