Pollarding of Trees on Cadogan Road
21 August 2013
Like many people on the development, we were upset to see the beautiful trees on Cadogan Road being 'pollarded' in the summer. For those who don't know what this is, it is a practice that has been used on trees since medieval times; it is used to keep trees 'under control'. However, this was carried out in August when the trees looked spectacular. Greenwich Council gave permission for the trees to be pollarded although there was no stipulation about when it had to be done. Having contacted the Horticultural Society, they advised the best time for pollarding is the end of Winter or early Spring. Infact when we approached the guys actually carrying it out, they told us they were surprised that they had been told to do it in August. They explained that it's more time consuming and therefore more expensive to do it when there are leaves on the trees and it is better for the trees when they don't have leaves on.
R&R were contacted to get an explanation and even though we were told a letter was being sent out, we never received one. We would like to know the rationale for doing this in the summer and why it was only the trees on Cadogan Road that were pollarded.
Interestingly, we were given an article on pollarding and by all accounts it isn't favoured by most arborists. Maybe we can have a discussion next time about what happens to the trees on the development? Particularly as it was quoted in this article that beautiful, healthy trees can increase the value of property anywhere between 10-20%.

Building starts by the Waterfront Centre
20 August 2013
Many of you who walk or cycle along the river to the Woolwich Ferry will notice that building has commenced. After raising concern about the reduced pathway, the fencing was pushed back a little and the ramp is still there for ease of access. Please take care along there though and let us know if you have any issues so that we can take it up with the Estate Manager.
